Treatment Detail

Examination

At Pembridge, an examination isn’t just about looking at your teeth. We take considerable time getting to know you as a person and tailoring a dental preventative plan around you.

Understanding Your Concerns

Any concerns you have about your teeth will be discussed in detail. This will include any concerns you have about pain from teeth, broken teeth, discoloured teeth, missing teeth or misaligned teeth. You may not have any concerns, and that is perfectly fine.

Medical History

To ensure that we keep you completely safe, we will ask you questions about your medical history including any medications you take. We encourage all of our patients to bring their prescriptions to their appointment. The medical history is taken in accordance to General Dental Council (GDC) regulations and is updated annually in accordance to the law.

Current Oral Hygiene Habits

We aim to create tailored oral hygiene plans for all of our patients. This ensures we can work together to keep your teeth healthy for the rest of your life. So that we can do this accurately, we will ask about your current oral hygiene habits.

Diet History

Believe it or not, diet affects our dental health! We will spend some time assessing your current diet and providing preventative advice so together we can ensure that your diet isn’t detrimental to your teeth.

Expert Exam

Using high-power magnification loupes our dentists will perform a thorough assessment of your gums and teeth. All of our findings will be recorded. Often we will take x-rays and digital images of your teeth. These help us better diagnose disease and allow us to clearly explain diagnosis and treatment to you. Your expert exam will also contain an oral cancer screen.

Treatment Planning

Any treatment you may require will be discussed with you in full detail, with any questions you have fully answered and explained. All benefits and risks associated with treatment will be discussed as well as options available to you.

Our dentists are completely transparent and like you to get involved in the process so a shared decision on any treatment can be made.

All fees will also be discussed by the dentist from the outset.
An appointment will be booked by reception at a time convenient for you. We will also send you a reminder about your appointment closer to the time.

Emergency Treatment

Unfortunately, sometimes teeth start to cause us some distress — often when we least expect it.

A tooth may start to cause pain, chip or break. Whatever the cause, at Pembridge we offer emergency appointments where our dentists will diagnose the cause of your distress and help to alleviate symptoms. We will also discuss any further treatment that may be required.

Emergency appointments are available every day, and we try to be flexible so that we can see you as quickly as possible. So if you are in pain, do not hesitate to contact us.

Gum Disease

Your gums help provide the foundations for your teeth, so it is essential that they remain healthy.

We pay close attention to your gums at your examination, and if we notice any signs of gum disease we will alert you to this and provide you with advice on how to address it.

It is important that gum disease is treated early as it is one of the few diseases that can actually lead to loss of teeth. There are several grades of gum disease, which require different types of treatment.

Though our dentists treat gum disease, they work closely with our hygienist and therapists to provide a comprehensive treatment for you with the sole aim of bringing your gums back to health.

Fillings

Dental fillings are usually required when a tooth breaks or suffers from tooth decay. Tooth decay is a bacterial process that results in damage to the structure of the tooth. It doesn’t always cause pain, and is usually identified in your examination.

If tooth decay is identified, the dentist must remove this and essentially disinfect the tooth. A hole then remains which needs to be filled so that you can eat, chew and use your tooth without fear of it breaking or causing you any further problems.

No one needs to know that you have a filling, and to this end we use state-of-the-art white fillings to fill your teeth. All of our dentists are trained to provide anatomically correct shaped fillings that match the colour of your existing teeth.

Your dentist will also provide advice on preventing tooth decay so that you do not require any fillings in the future.

Before

After

Root Canal Treatments

Root canal treatment is most commonly required when tooth decay spreads to the ‘nerve’ of the tooth. The bacteria enter the ‘root canal system’ and can often cause considerable pain. Our aim is to alleviate the pain and restore the tooth back to optimal function.

Root canal treatment is when the dentist, using high-end specialised equipment, disinfects and removes the bacteria from the infected root canal system. The root canal system is then filled with a special anti-bacterial filling material.

This ensures that you become pain free and are able to function on the tooth without any further problem.

The whole process is pain free and often we find patients snoring in the chair as we work.

Veneers

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are tooth shaped and attach to the front surface of your teeth.

They are commonly used for anterior teeth to enhance the shape, size and colour of them.

The veneers are manufactured in the laboratory, with whom we work very closely. We also ensure that you are involved in every step along the way so that we can create a smile that you are proud to show off.

Veneers are a very sought-after cosmetic treatment; however, whether veneers are used or not depends on the underlying concern of the patient and the condition of the teeth, as, more often then not, more conservative options of treating the teeth usually suffice.

Crowns

Sometimes teeth break in such a way that they require stronger materials to restore their structure, strength and function.

Crowns can be made form a variety of different materials, ranging from ceramic to gold. Your dentist will advise you on the best materials for your tooth, and which one you choose is your decision.

All of our dentists are trained in providing conservative crowns, which are often termed ‘onlays’. Onlays allow the healthy remaining tooth structure to be preserved whilst only replacing the damaged tooth structure.

There is no reason why anyone should be able to tell that you have a crown. Our dentists possess the skill to blend in the ceramic crowns with the colour of your teeth, so that the crown is almost imperceptible.

Crowns and Onlays that blend in with the rest of your teeth, making them invisible.

Bridges

You may have one or more missing teeth. They may have been extracted or may not have been present from birth. Missing teeth can often detract from appearance or cause loss of function.

There are several ways to replace missing teeth; these include implants, bridges or dentures. Every patient is unique and there isn’t a one-fit solution for everyone. Therefore your dentist will discuss all options with you and advise you on the best one.

An implant is essentially a fixed titanium pole that integrates with the bone of the jaw and provides support for a crown.

There are several different types of bridges available, and they essentially use the teeth ether side of a gap to close the space with a crown.

Dentures can be made of acrylic or metal and are commonly used in mouths where several teeth are missing. Unlike implants and bridges, they can be removed from the mouth.

Extractions

Though we try our upmost to preserve your teeth, sometimes teeth become damaged beyond repair and it becomes in your best interest to have the tooth removed.

Before removing any teeth your dentist will discuss all replacement options with you and will also discuss any temporary replacement for the missing tooth before a more definitive option is placed.

Temporary replacement options and sometimes even permanent replacement options can be placed on the day of removal so that you don’t need to walk away with a missing tooth.

Children’s Dentistry

At Pembridge, our team of dentists, hygienists and therapists are fully trained to look after the teeth of children.

We encourage you to bring your child as soon as the first teeth start to emerge. We truly believe that good habits start young, so we place a big emphasis on prevention and spend time with the child and the parent explaining correct oral hygiene and diet habits.

Our team have all been trained in child behavioural management techniques and are very good at acclimatising your child to the dental environment and making your child comfortable in the dental chair.

Tooth Whitening

Ever wanted a whiter, brighter smile? If yes, then tooth whitening is for you.

It is a safe procedure that initially involves having bleaching trays fabricated in the practice specifically for your teeth. You then whiten your teeth in the comfort of your own home.

Our dentists will provide you with clear instructions and guidelines on how to use the bleach in the trays at home. You can choose to whiten your teeth at night whilst you sleep or whiten them for one hour during the day.

You can re-use these trays in the future, provided they are still fit for use, and buy top-up bleach directly from us.

It is important before any whitening procedure is carried out that you have a thorough examination to ensure there is no dental disease that is currently active in your mouth. Only once you are deemed to be dentally fit can you undergo aesthetic procedures such as whitening.

It is important that whenever you whiten your teeth that this is done by a regulated UK dentist and that the concentrations of the bleach do not exceed that which is allowed by UK law.

Veneers

They are commonly used for anterior teeth to enhance the shape, size and colour of them.

Smile Make Overs

All of our dentists are trained in providing “Smile Makeovers”.

Smile makeovers often consist of several treatment modalities, including but not limited to, tooth whitening, orthodontics, white fillings and veneers. This is a very tailored plan and will be different for every patient.

If this is something you are interested in, then we advise you to book in for an aesthetic consultation in which we assess your concerns, take photographs and work with you to plan a smile that works for you and your face.

Invisalign

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that is used to align misaligned teeth. Traditionally, teeth have been aligned using fixed metal wires, more commonly known as “Train Tracks”. Invisalign, however, consists of see-through braces known as aligners that allow your teeth to be moved discretely without anyone knowing.

Each case has a series of aligners that slowly move your teeth into position. The aligners need to be changed every 1-2 weeks, and they can be changed directly by you. Your dentist will however assess you approximately every 4 weeks to ensure the teeth are moving as intended.

The treatment time varies and is case specific, but on average a case could take anywhere from 12-18 months to complete.

At Pembridge, we offer a free Invisalign consultation

Inman Aligner

Inman Aligner is an orthodontic appliance that is used to align misaligned teeth. Traditionally, teeth have been aligned using fixed metal wires, more commonly known as “Train Tracks”. Inman aligner, however, consists of a retainer that allows movement of your front teeth with treatment taking on average between 3-6 months.

At Pembridge, we offer a free Inman Aligner consultation

Your gums help provide the foundations for your teeth so it is essential that they remain healthy.

So, in cases of gum disease: Once we have your gum disease under control, our hygienists will work with you on a maintenance plan to ensure that your mouth continues to remain free of disease.

Our hygienists will spend a lot of time teaching you a variety of methods on how to keep your teeth clean to prevent gum disease and will produce a tailored plan just for you.

Therapy

We are fortunate that our hygienists are also qualified dental therapists. They have undergone extensive training similar to that of dentists, which means they are fully qualified to undertake examinations, x-rays and fillings.

Our therapy services are offered to children in the practice. Our therapists have all been trained in child behavioural management techniques and are very good at acclimatising your child to the dental environment and making your child comfortable in the dental chair.

Treatment

We have a strong team ethos on training and self-development, and it’s important to us all to keep updating our skills.
As new dental techniques and products emerge, we want to make sure we are able to offer the best of what is available.
