Hygiene and gum health

What Airflow teeth cleaning is

Airflow is a modern way of cleaning teeth. Instead of relying mainly on metal instruments to scrape plaque away, it uses a fine, controlled spray of warm water, air and a very fine powder. The spray lifts the soft film of bacteria that builds up on teeth (called biofilm), along with plaque and surface staining, from the teeth and gently along the gumline.

You may also see it called Guided Biofilm Therapy, or GBT. That is the name for the step-by-step way of cleaning built around the Airflow spray: show where the plaque is, remove the biofilm, deal with any hard tartar, then check. On our fee guide it is one treatment at one price.

How it differs from a scale and polish

A traditional scale and polish removes tartar with instruments and then polishes the teeth with a paste. It works well, but it can feel scratchy on sensitive teeth and the polishing paste does not reach every gap.

With Airflow, most of the cleaning is done by the spray, so less scraping is needed and the spray reaches between teeth, around brace wires and along the edges of crowns, bonding and implants. Hard tartar still needs removing, and that is done with a fine ultrasonic instrument where it is needed rather than across every tooth.

Hygiene is what our patients mention most

Cleaning is the topic our Google reviews mention more than any other, and an Airflow clean is the gentlest version of it we offer. If you already see our hygienist, you can ask for Airflow at your next visit. If you are new to Pembridge Dental, your first step is usually a check-up, so the dentist and the hygiene team see the same picture.

Thinking about teeth whitening or composite bonding? A clean first gives the best starting point for both. Regular hygiene visits can be spread across the year with a membership plan, and every price is on our fee guide.

Who an Airflow clean suits, and who it does not

It suits you if

  • You want a thorough clean that feels gentler than scraping, especially if your teeth are sensitive.
  • You have staining from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking that brushing does not shift.
  • You have braces, aligner attachments, implants, crowns or bonding that need careful cleaning around.
  • You are about to start whitening or cosmetic treatment and want the cleanest possible starting point.

It may not suit you if

  • You have a breathing condition such as severe asthma or COPD: tell us, as we may clean your teeth a different way.
  • You are in pain or have broken a tooth: an emergency appointment is the right first step.
  • You have deeper gum problems: a single clean is not enough, and we will explain gum treatment over more than one visit.
  • You want your teeth whiter than their natural colour: Airflow removes staining, it does not bleach.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 1: Check and show

We check your gums and may paint on a harmless coloured solution that shows exactly where plaque is sitting, so you can see what we are removing.

  2. Step 2: Airflow

A fine spray of warm water, air and a very fine powder lifts plaque, biofilm and staining from the teeth and along the gumline.

  3. Step 3: Any hard tartar

Tartar that has set hard is removed with a fine ultrasonic instrument, only where it is needed.

  4. Step 4: Advice for home

We show you where plaque was building up and which brushes or interdental cleaners will keep it off between visits.

Results and aftercare

How your teeth feel after

Most people notice smooth, clean teeth straight away, and surface staining is lighter or gone. Your teeth return to their own natural shade, not a bleached one.

Keeping it that way

Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth once a day, and keep up regular hygiene visits. Stains from tea, coffee and red wine come back over time, so the gap between visits matters.

Before whitening or bonding

A clean first means whitening gel reaches the enamel evenly and bonding is matched to your true tooth colour. Our Ultimate Glow whitening (£800) starts with an Airflow clean.

Airflow Teeth Cleaning: your questions

Still have a question?

Call reception on 020 7727 3976, Monday to Friday. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

How much is Airflow teeth cleaning in London?

An Airflow clean at Pembridge Dental in W8 is £150 per visit. That covers the full clean with your hygiene team, including any hard tartar removal and advice for home. If your gums need treatment beyond a clean, gum treatment is £400 per arch, and we explain why before anything is booked.

What is Airflow teeth cleaning?

Airflow is a way of cleaning teeth with a fine, controlled spray of warm water, air and a very fine powder. It lifts the soft film of bacteria (biofilm), plaque and surface staining from teeth and along the gums, so less scraping is needed. Any hard tartar left afterwards is removed with a fine ultrasonic instrument.

Does Airflow hurt?

Airflow is not usually painful. The water is warm rather than cold, and the powder is very fine, so many people with sensitive teeth find it more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish. Tell us if any area feels sensitive and we will adjust as we go.

Is Airflow better than a scale and polish?

Airflow and a scale and polish do the same job, removing what brushing misses, in different ways. Airflow relies more on the water, air and powder spray and less on scraping, which suits sensitive teeth, staining and dental work like implants and braces. Your hygiene team will tell you which suits your mouth.

Is Airflow teeth cleaning worth it?

An Airflow clean is worth it if you want a thorough clean that feels gentle, have staining that brushing does not shift, or have braces, implants or bonding that need careful cleaning. It does not replace brushing and cleaning between your teeth at home, which is what keeps the result between visits.

Will Airflow whiten my teeth?

Airflow removes surface staining, so teeth often look brighter afterwards, but it does not change their natural colour. If you want your teeth whiter than their natural shade, that is teeth whitening. An Airflow clean is a good first step before whitening.

How long does an Airflow clean take, and how often should I have one?

An Airflow clean is a single hygiene visit, and we tell you how long to allow when you book. How often you come depends on your gums and how quickly staining and build-up return. Some people come twice a year, others more often, and we will recommend a gap that suits you.
