Replacing missing teeth

Partial and full dentures

A denture is a removable plate that carries false teeth. It fits over your gums and, where you still have some teeth, clips around them. There are two main kinds.

A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth when you still have some of your own. It fills the gaps so you can eat and smile normally, and stops the remaining teeth drifting into the spaces. A full denture replaces every tooth in the upper or lower jaw and is held by the shape of the gums and a thin layer of saliva.

Acrylic or cobalt chrome

Acrylic dentures are made entirely of tough, gum-coloured plastic. They are straightforward to adjust and to add a tooth to later, which suits a mouth that is still changing.

Cobalt chrome dentures have a thin metal frame under the teeth. The frame is strong enough to be very thin, so the denture covers less of your mouth, feels lighter and usually sits more securely. Many people find a chrome partial denture more comfortable to wear every day. We explain which suits your mouth at your consultation.

Dentures, bridges and implants

Dentures are one of three ways to replace missing teeth. A bridge is fixed to the teeth either side of a gap, so it does not come out, but it needs healthy neighbouring teeth. Dental implants replace teeth without touching the others, but take months and cost more. Dentures are the quickest and usually the least expensive way to replace several teeth, and they need no surgery.

Made to fit, and adjusted until they do

A denture is only as good as its fit. That is why we take time over the moulds, the bite and the try-in, and why we see you again after it is fitted. If you are new to Pembridge Dental, your first visit is a check-up. Every price is on our fee guide.

Who dentures suit, and who they do not

It suits you if

  • You have lost several teeth and want to replace them without surgery.
  • Implants are not right for you, for health, bone or cost reasons.
  • Your current denture is loose, broken, worn or uncomfortable and needs replacing.
  • You want a faster option than implants, while you decide on longer-term treatment.

It may not suit you if

  • You are missing one tooth with healthy teeth either side: a bridge or an implant may suit you better.
  • You have decay or gum disease that needs treating first, so the teeth that hold a partial denture stay healthy.
  • You want teeth that are fixed in and never come out: ask about dental implants.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 1: Examination

We check your gums, any remaining teeth and your bite, and talk through partial or full, acrylic or cobalt chrome, with the cost of each.

  2. Step 2: Moulds

We take moulds of your mouth and record how your jaws meet, so the laboratory can build the denture to fit.

  3. Step 3: Try-in

You try the teeth set in wax, so you can see the shape, colour and fit and ask for changes before the denture is finished.

  4. Step 4: Fitting

We fit the finished denture, check your bite, and show you how to put it in, take it out and clean it.

  5. Step 5: Review

We see you again after a few days to ease any sore spots. Small adjustments in the first weeks are normal.

Results and aftercare

Getting used to a denture

Eating and speaking feel different for the first few weeks. Start with soft food cut into small pieces, and read aloud to get used to speaking with it. Most people adapt within a few weeks.

How long dentures last

Dentures last several years with good care, but your gums and jawbone slowly change shape, so a denture can loosen over time. It may need relining to refit it, and eventually replacing.

Looking after it

Take it out and clean it every day with a soft brush, leave it out at night unless we advise otherwise, and keep it in water so it does not dry out. Keep up check-ups for your gums and any remaining teeth.

How much are dentures?

Dentures at Pembridge Dental are £850 to £1,450, depending on the type. A partial acrylic denture is £850 to £1,250, depending on how many teeth it replaces. A full acrylic denture, for a whole upper or lower arch, is £1,350. A cobalt chrome partial denture, with a thin metal frame that is lighter and slimmer to wear, is £1,450.

New patients have an exam first (£120), and you get a written plan with the cost before anything is made.

How much are dentures in London?

Dentures at Pembridge Dental in London are £850 to £1,450, depending on the type. A partial acrylic denture is £850 to £1,250, a full acrylic denture is £1,350, and a cobalt chrome partial denture is £1,450. Your written plan shows the exact cost before anything is made.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures usually last several years with good care. Your gums and jawbone slowly change shape after teeth are lost, so a denture that fitted well can loosen. It may need relining to refit it, and eventually replacing. Regular check-ups let us spot this early.

What is a cobalt chrome denture?

A cobalt chrome denture is a partial denture built on a thin, strong metal frame, with the false teeth and gum-coloured parts attached to it. It is thinner and lighter than an all-acrylic denture, covers less of the roof of your mouth, and is often more comfortable to wear day to day.

How long does it take to make dentures?

Making dentures usually takes several visits over a few weeks: an examination, moulds, a try-in with the teeth set in wax, and the fitting, followed by a review. The try-in matters, because it is when you can ask for changes to the shape or colour before the denture is finished.

Will dentures feel strange at first?

New dentures do feel strange at first. Eating and speaking take practice, and your mouth may make more saliva for a while. Start with soft food in small pieces and read aloud to practise speaking. Most people adapt within a few weeks, and we adjust any sore spots.

Can implants hold a denture in place?

Dental implants can sometimes be used to hold a denture firmly in place, which helps people whose lower denture moves when they eat. Whether it suits you depends on your bone and your health. Ask at your consultation, and see our dental implants page for how implants work.
