Urgent dental care

When you need us quickly

Dental pain rarely picks a good moment. A cracked tooth, a lost filling, a throbbing ache that wakes you at night: these need looking at properly, not just covering with painkillers.

We see emergency patients as soon as we can, whether or not you are already a patient here. As we put it at the practice: “We keep what we need on hand, so we can open up a tooth, ease the pain, and sort the problem in one visit.” Where a longer repair is needed, we make the tooth comfortable first and plan the rest with you.

What to do before you get here

  • Toothache: take a painkiller that is safe for you, following the packet. Do not put aspirin on the gum.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: keep any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and avoid chewing on that side.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet food.
  • Knocked-out tooth: hold it by the crown, keep it in milk and come in straight away.

When to go to A&E instead

Go to A&E or call 999 if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to your face or jaw. If we are closed and you need advice, NHS 111 can help.

Once you are out of pain, a check-up and regular hygiene visits help stop it happening again. Many painful teeth can be saved with root canal treatment and protected with a crown; a painful wisdom tooth may need taking out. If a tooth cannot be saved, we explain the options, including dental implants. Every price is on our fee guide, and directions are on our contact page.

Who an emergency appointment suits, and who it does not

It suits you if

  • You have toothache that is keeping you awake or stopping you eating.
  • You have chipped, cracked or broken a tooth.
  • A filling or crown has come out.
  • You have a swelling or an infection around a tooth, without trouble breathing or swallowing.
  • A tooth has been knocked out or loosened in an accident.

It may not suit you if

  • You have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to your face: go to A&E or call 999.
  • We are closed and you need advice now: call NHS 111, which can tell you where to go.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 1: Call or book online

Call 020 7727 3976 or book online. Tell us what has happened and how much pain you are in, so we can see you as soon as we can.

  2. Step 2: Assessment

We find the cause, usually with an X-ray, and explain what is going on and the options for fixing it, with the cost.

  3. Step 3: Pain relief and repair

Where we can, we ease the pain and sort the problem in the same visit. If a longer repair is needed, we make the tooth comfortable and plan the rest.

Results and aftercare

Getting out of pain

The first aim is to get you comfortable. Often the cause can be treated on the day; sometimes a temporary repair comes first and the permanent one follows.

After the appointment

We tell you what to expect over the next few days, which painkillers are suitable, and what to do if anything gets worse.

Stopping it happening again

Once the emergency is over, a check-up and regular hygiene visits help catch problems before they turn into pain.

"After almost two years of pain that my previous dentist insisted wasn't coming from my molar, Dr Ardalan spotted the cracked tooth straight away and explained everything very clearly. I got a next day appointment, the whole thing was handled quickly, and the pain is finally gone."

Emergency Dentist: your questions

Still have a question?

Call reception on 020 7727 3976, Monday to Friday. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

How quickly can I see an emergency dentist in Notting Hill?

Pembridge Dental sees emergency patients as soon as we can. Call 020 7727 3976 and tell us what has happened, or book online. How quickly we can see you depends on the diary that day, and we will always tell you honestly when the earliest time is.

How much is an emergency dental appointment?

An emergency appointment at Pembridge Dental is £95 at the moment, usually £150, for the assessment and pain relief. Our Rescue and Repair appointment, £295, covers the check, the X-ray and the treatment, such as a filling or an extraction, in one visit. If you need more than that, such as a crown, we explain the options and the cost before we start.

Will the treatment hurt?

Emergency treatment is done with the tooth numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Most people find the relief afterwards is the main thing they notice. Tell us if anything is uncomfortable and we will stop and adjust.

What should I do if I knock a tooth out?

If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown, the part you normally see, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk. Keep it in milk and come in or call straight away, because time matters for saving it.

What if you are closed?

If we are closed and you need advice, call NHS 111, which can tell you where to get help. If you have swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious facial injury, go to A&E or call 999.

I am not a patient of yours. Can I still come?

Emergency appointments are open to new patients as well as existing ones. Call 020 7727 3976 or book online. After the emergency is dealt with, you are welcome to stay with us for check-ups and hygiene visits.

What should I do after emergency treatment?

After emergency treatment, follow the advice we give you on the day, take suitable painkillers if you need them, and avoid chewing on that side until the numbness wears off. Call us if pain, swelling or bleeding gets worse rather than better.
