Why have whitening with a dentist
Whitening works by gently bleaching the colour inside the tooth. In the UK, gels strong enough to make a real difference may only be provided by a dentist or under a dentist’s prescription. That rule exists for good reason: whitening teeth with decay, worn enamel or gum problems can be painful and can hide problems that need treatment.
At Pembridge Dental we check your teeth and gums first, tell you honestly how far your teeth are likely to whiten, and supervise the whitening from start to finish.
Home whitening or Ultimate Glow
Home whitening uses trays made to fit your teeth and a whitening gel you wear at home, as we advise. It is gradual and lets you stop at the shade you are happy with.
Ultimate Glow combines a professional clean, a whitening session in the practice and a home kit to continue with. Starting with a clean removes surface staining so the whitening gel works on the tooth itself.
Whitening before other cosmetic work
Whitening does not change the colour of bonding, veneers, crowns or fillings. If you are planning composite bonding or veneers, we whiten first so the new work can be matched to your brighter shade. A hygiene visit beforehand also helps. New patients start with a check-up, and every price is on our fee guide.
Who teeth whitening suits, and who it does not
It suits you if
- Your natural teeth have yellowed or stained with age, tea, coffee or red wine.
- Your teeth and gums are healthy, or any problems have been treated first.
- You want a brighter shade of your own teeth rather than a change of shape.
- You are planning bonding or veneers and want the colour set first.
It may not suit you if
- Your front teeth have crowns, veneers, bonding or large white fillings: these do not change colour with whitening.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding: we suggest waiting.
- You have untreated decay, gum disease or very sensitive teeth, which need dealing with first.
- Your staining is very deep, where veneers or bonding may be the better option.
What happens, step by step
-
Step 1: Check and shade
We check your teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening, note your starting shade, and explain what result is realistic for your teeth.
-
Step 2: Your whitening
For home whitening we make trays that fit your teeth and show you how to use the gel. The Ultimate Glow package adds a professional clean and a whitening session in the practice.
-
Step 3: Review
We check how your teeth have responded and how they feel, and advise on keeping the shade.
Results and aftercare
What to expect
Most people see their natural teeth become several shades lighter, but how far they whiten varies from person to person. We tell you honestly what is realistic for your teeth.
Keeping the shade
Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking bring staining back over time. Your trays can be used for occasional top-ups, as we advise.
Fillings and crowns
Whitening only works on natural enamel. Existing crowns, veneers and fillings stay their current colour and may need replacing to match.

Teeth Whitening: your questions
Still have a question?
Call reception on 020 7727 3976, Monday to Friday. We are happy to talk it through before you book.
How much is teeth whitening in Notting Hill?
Teeth whitening at Pembridge Dental is £600 for a home whitening kit. Our Ultimate Glow package, £800, includes a professional clean, a whitening session in the practice and a home kit. We check your teeth first and confirm the cost before you start.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Teeth whitening does not usually hurt, but sensitivity during and shortly after treatment is common. It is usually short-lived. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth helps, and we can adjust how often you whiten if your teeth feel sensitive.
How long does whitening take?
Home whitening is done over a number of days or weeks, wearing the trays as we advise. The in-practice session in the Ultimate Glow package adds a quicker start. How long you need depends on your starting shade and how your teeth respond.
Will whitening work on my crowns or fillings?
Whitening works on natural enamel only. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay the colour they are now. If they are on front teeth, they may need replacing after whitening so everything matches. We explain this before you start.
Why should a dentist do my whitening?
In the UK, whitening with products strong enough to make a real difference may only be provided by a dentist or under a dentist's prescription. A dentist also checks your teeth and gums first, because whitening over decay or gum problems can cause pain.
How do I keep my teeth white afterwards?
Keep your teeth white by cutting down on tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, brushing twice a day, and keeping up regular hygiene visits. Your trays can be used for occasional top-ups, as we advise, to keep the shade.
