Teeth straightening

How clear aligners work

Clear aligners are thin, close-fitting trays made of clear plastic. Each set is shaped slightly differently from the last, so wearing them in order moves your teeth a small step at a time. They are hard to see when you wear them, and you take them out to eat and to brush.

They work well for crowding, crooked teeth and gaps. They do need commitment: aligners only move teeth while they are in your mouth, so they are worn for most of the day and night.

Choosing the right option

The practice offers two aligner options: Invisalign, from a registered Invisalign provider, and Pembridge Aligners, the practice’s own clear aligners, which cost about £1,000 less. The right one depends on how far your teeth need to move, and that is something to decide after an examination, not from a price list. At the consultation we explain which option fits your teeth and why, and you see the full cost in writing first.

After the straightening

Once your teeth are where you want them, retainers keep them there. Many people also choose teeth whitening or composite bonding after straightening, to tidy edges or brighten the colour. If you are new to the practice, start with a check-up. All our prices are on the fee guide.

Who Invisalign suits, and who it does not

It suits you if

  • Your teeth are crowded, crooked or have gaps, and you would like them straighter.
  • You want a brace that is hard to see and can be taken out to eat and brush.
  • You can wear the aligners for most of the day and night, every day.
  • Your teeth and gums are healthy, or any problems have been treated first.

It may not suit you if

  • You would struggle to wear aligners for most of the day: they only work when they are in.
  • You have gum disease or decay that needs treating first.
  • Your bite needs a larger correction than aligners can manage. We will say so at the consultation and explain the alternatives.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 1: Consultation

We examine your teeth and bite, talk about what you want to change, and explain which aligner option fits your teeth and why.

  2. Step 2: Records and plan

We take scans or impressions and photographs, then show you the planned tooth movements and the full cost in writing before you decide.

  3. Step 3: Wearing the aligners

You wear each set of aligners for the time we advise, changing to the next set as your teeth move, with check-ups along the way.

  4. Step 4: Retainers

When the teeth are in place, retainers hold them there. Without them, teeth tend to drift back.

Results and aftercare

What to expect

Teeth move gradually, set by set. How far they can move, and how long it takes, depends on your starting point; we explain this honestly at the consultation.

Looking after aligners

Take them out to eat and drink anything but water, brush before you put them back in, and clean the aligners as we show you.

Keeping teeth straight

Retainers are part of the treatment, not an extra afterthought. Wearing them as advised is what keeps the result.

Invisalign: your questions

Still have a question?

Call reception on 020 7727 3976, Monday to Friday. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

How much is Invisalign in Notting Hill?

A full course of Invisalign at Pembridge Dental is £3,950. Our own Pembridge Aligners are £2,950. Which one suits you depends on how much your teeth need to move. You get the full cost in writing, including retainers, before you start.

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

Clear aligner treatment takes as long as your teeth need to move safely, which varies a lot from person to person. Small corrections are quicker than larger ones. We give you an estimate based on your own plan at the consultation, before you commit.

Do clear aligners hurt?

Clear aligners are not usually painful, but each new set can feel tight or slightly sore for a day or two while the teeth start to move. Most people find this settles quickly. Normal painkillers can help in the first days if needed.

What is the difference between Invisalign and Pembridge Aligners?

There are two options. Invisalign, £3,950, is a full course from a registered Invisalign provider. Pembridge Aligners, £2,950, cost less. We explain which option fits your teeth at the consultation, and why.

Do I need to wear retainers afterwards?

Retainers are needed after aligner treatment. Teeth naturally tend to drift back towards where they started, and retainers hold them in their new position. We explain how and when to wear them, and their cost is listed on our fee guide.

How do I look after my aligners?

Look after aligners by taking them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, brushing your teeth before putting them back, and cleaning the aligners as we show you. Keep them in their case when they are out, so they are not lost or damaged.
