General and family dentistry

What a check-up is for

A check-up is how small problems are found while they are still small. A filling caught early is quicker and cheaper than a root canal caught late, and gum disease found early can usually be kept under control with good cleaning at home and regular hygiene visits.

At Pembridge Dental the check-up is not rushed. We look at each tooth, your gums, your bite and the inside of your mouth, and we explain what we see. If you need treatment, you get the options in plain words and a written plan with the costs before anything is booked. If nothing needs doing, we tell you that too.

Family dentistry under one roof

We see adults, teenagers and children, so a family can come to the same practice and often book together. Children’s exams include advice for parents, and teenagers get the same straight explanations as adults. Our fees for children are listed separately.

If you are nervous, tell us. Patients often say in their reviews how much it helped that every step was explained before it happened.

Your first visit

If you are new to Pembridge Dental, your first appointment is a new patient exam. Our new patients page explains what happens and what to bring. To spread the cost of check-ups and hygiene visits through the year, see our membership plans.

Who a check-up suits, and who it does not

It suits you if

  • You are new to the practice, or have not seen a dentist for a while.
  • You want a regular check so small problems are found while they are still small.
  • You are bringing a child or teenager for their own exam.
  • You are nervous about the dentist and want someone who explains before doing anything.

It may not suit you if

  • You are in pain right now or have broken a tooth: book an emergency appointment instead, so we can deal with the problem on the day you come in.
  • You are looking for NHS treatment: we are a private practice only.

What happens, step by step

  1. Step 1: Your history

We ask about your health, any medicines you take, and anything about your teeth that is bothering you.

  2. Step 2: The examination

We check each tooth, your gums, your bite and the soft tissues of your mouth, and take X-rays if they are needed to see between and under teeth.

  3. Step 3: What we found, and your plan

We explain what we see in plain words. If anything needs treatment you get the options and a written plan with the costs before anything is booked.

Results and aftercare

How often to come

Most adults come once or twice a year, but the right gap depends on your teeth and gums. We tell you what we recommend for you, and why.

Between visits

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, and keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes. Regular hygiene visits help keep gums healthy.

Children and teenagers

Children have their own exams, with advice for parents on brushing and diet. Teenagers get the same clear explanations as adults.

How much does a dental check-up cost?

A private dental check-up at Pembridge Dental costs £120 for your first visit as a new patient, and £80 after that. The first exam costs more because it takes longer: we take your full history and look at everything from scratch.

Children have their own fees: £80 for a new patient exam and £60 after that. X-rays are only taken when we need them, at £25 each or £95 for a full-mouth X-ray, and we tell you before we take any. A hygiene clean is a separate visit (£130). If you would rather pay monthly, a membership plan covers your check-ups and hygiene visits.

Dental Check-Ups: your questions

Still have a question?

Call reception on 020 7727 3976, Monday to Friday. We are happy to talk it through before you book.

How much is a dental check-up in Notting Hill?

A new patient exam at Pembridge Dental is £120, and an exam for existing patients is £80. Children's exams are £80 for new patients and £60 for existing patients. X-rays, if needed, are £25 each, or £95 for a full-mouth X-ray.

How long does a check-up take?

A check-up for an existing patient is usually a short appointment. A first visit as a new patient takes longer, because we take your history and look at everything properly. We tell you how long to allow when you book.

Does a dental check-up hurt?

A dental check-up should not hurt. It is a careful look at your teeth and gums, sometimes with X-rays. If a tooth is sensitive, tell us and we will take it gently. Nothing is treated on the day without you agreeing first.

Do you see children?

Children are very welcome at Pembridge Dental. They have their own exam, with advice for parents about brushing, diet and keeping teeth healthy as they grow. Many families bring children and parents in at the same visit.

I am nervous about the dentist. What can I expect?

Nervous patients are common, and you are not alone. Tell us when you book or when you arrive. We explain what we are going to do before we do it, go at your pace, and you can ask us to stop at any time.

How often should you go to the dentist?

How often you should see the dentist depends on your teeth and gums. Many adults come once or twice a year, but someone with healthy teeth and gums may need to come less often, and someone with gum problems or a lot of fillings more often. At your check-up we tell you the gap we recommend for you, and why.

At what age should a child first see a dentist?

A child can come to the dentist as soon as their first baby teeth appear, and certainly by their first birthday. Early visits are short and gentle, mostly a look and advice for parents on brushing and diet, and they help children get used to the dentist before they ever need treatment.

Can I spread the cost of check-ups?

Check-ups and hygiene visits can be spread across the year with a monthly membership plan. The plans and what each one covers are on our membership page, and we can explain them at your first visit.
